Fuel Efficiency

Unread postby armouredtrooper » Tue Oct 03, 2017 11:44 pm

So I just sat down and tallied up all my gas receipts for my Ural. I drove 1254 km on my bike since I bought her, and used a total of 71.48 liters of fuel. Figuring there is 3.5 liters to a gallon and 1.6 km to a mile, I recon I'm getting 36.83 miles to a gallon. Does that sound right folks? Oops! So I rechecked my data, I found out that there is 3.78 liters to a US gallon, so my figures are off a bit. It now works out even better 39.78 mi/gallon.. Yep, life is good!

Impressive. I'm told it gets better before it gets worse.

Bob, So the book says our Ural fuel tanks hold 5.5 Gallons, Is that US or imperial Gallons?

Probably US, simply because they are the only ones that cling to the antiquated and illogical Imperial system. Personally, since I buy my fuel by the litre and my odometers are in Km I would be more interested in how many Km a litre of gas will take me.

IMWA uses the American measurement.

That is what makes sense but I clung to the mpg thing for years , even when I bought my BMW and it displays the fuel usage in litres per 100 k I was doing all this math converting that to mpg and how many gallons the 18 litre tank was to figure out my range . :banghead: When I finally shook off my dependence on mpg it was much easier at 5 litres per 100 km and a 18 litre tank you are good for 300km with 3 litres of wiggle room ... so much simpler

Hi Guys. Actually the American gallon is short by I believe 1/10 of the British & Canadian Gallon which are as you say 4.55 Lts . I still do all my calculations in imperial. I find that the metric system is to course, & you need 10 fingers to work anything out !

The US gallon is actually 75% of the Imperial gallon. Their gallons are only 128 oz while ours are 140.

And its the Imperial system that's coarse. The smallest common unit is the ounce and that's almost 30cc....

Besides, I like to use my thumbs when I count on my fingers :yep:
